Laser or foam for varicose veins: which option is right for you?

“My friend had laser treatment. Do I need the same thing?”
Her experience can help you ask questions. But to choose a treatment, we need to understand what is happening in your veins.
Endovenous laser and foam sclerotherapy work differently. The decision starts with a diagnosis.
What is the difference between laser and foam?
| Endovenous laser | Foam sclerotherapy | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A catheter delivers heat energy to close the treated vein. | A medication is injected as a foam, causing the vein to close. |
| How it is guided | Using ultrasound. | Using ultrasound when the veins being treated require this guidance. |
Both can be used to treat varicose veins, but they are not interchangeable in every case. Endovenous laser should not be confused with laser applied to the skin.
When is each option considered?
When varicose veins with reflux in a main vein, such as a saphenous vein, are confirmed, NICE guidelines recommend endothermal ablation if suitable. Endovenous laser is one of these techniques. If thermal ablation is unsuitable, they recommend ultrasound-guided foam as an alternative.
This does not mean every visible vein needs laser treatment. Small superficial veins need a different assessment and approach. Sometimes techniques can be combined.
What does a venous duplex ultrasound show?
It assesses blood flow, checks for reflux and identifies the veins involved. This helps plan treatment: a photograph alone cannot answer these questions.
What about recovery?
These treatments are usually outpatient procedures. Discomfort and bruising can occur. Aftercare, temporary limitations, risks and the possible need for additional sessions should be discussed according to your situation and procedure.
